Parc Pontyberem

The River Teifi cuts through this nature reserve just outside Carmarthen, and it's the kind of place where you actually want to slow down. Parc Pontyberem is essentially a working landscape - woodland, meadow, and riverbank all in one go - rather than a manicured visitor attraction with gift shops and cafés.

What you get here is straightforward: decent walking routes through mixed woodland, access to the river itself, and genuine quiet. The paths vary in difficulty, so you're not locked into a specific route. Birdwatchers come for the woodland species, and families with small children find the flatter sections manageable enough for a decent morning out. The riverbank is the real draw - proper riverside walking with decent views.

It's free to visit, which helps. Allow anything from forty minutes to a couple of hours depending on which trails you fancy and how often you stop to actually look at things. Spring and early summer are best if you want wildflowers and active bird life.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Route 47 Glamping or River View Touring Park are your closest options, both within five miles - this is a decent leg-stretcher without becoming a full day excursion. It works particularly well if your kids are already tired from the glamping site but still need an hour of fresh air. Don't expect anything dramatic or Instagram-worthy. This is proper countryside, the kind that rewards a slow walk and a bit of attention.
