Parc Y Gleision Standing Stone

Standing like a weathered sentinel on Anglesey's moorland, this ancient stone monument cuts a solitary figure against the North Wales sky. Parc Y Gleision's standing stone reaches about three metres high - not the tallest you'll find, but there's something properly atmospheric about its remote setting that makes the short walk worthwhile.

Archaeology buffs will appreciate this Bronze Age survivor, though don't expect detailed information boards or visitor facilities. It's just you, the stone, and whatever stories your imagination conjures about the people who erected it some 4,000 years ago. The surrounding landscape feels appropriately ancient, with views stretching towards Snowdonia's peaks.

Families with younger children might find it a bit underwhelming - it's essentially a single stone in a field, after all. But older kids interested in history or anyone who enjoys a peaceful countryside ramble will find it a pleasant detour. The walk from the nearest parking spot takes about ten minutes across fairly easy ground.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Snowdon View Holiday Park or Llanberis Touring Park, it makes for a decent morning excursion before heading to Caernarfon's castle or tackling Snowdon itself. Just don't expect to spend more than half an hour here unless you're particularly taken with Bronze Age monuments.
