Park Wood

Park Wood is a proper working forest just outside Newmarket, the kind of place that feels a world away from the racing town itself. It's not a manicured country estate - this is actual commercial woodland with the slightly wild, undermanaged character that makes for better walking. The trees are mixed, mature in parts, and there are actual trails rather than paved paths, which means you're genuinely in the forest rather than walking through it.

Walkers will find the most value here. It's the sort of wood where you might spot deer or hear woodpeckers, and the ground is soft underfoot - better for knees than tarmac. Families with older kids who don't need constant entertainment will get on fine; younger ones might lose interest after an hour or so since there aren't play facilities or dramatic viewpoints. The woodland is relatively compact, so you're unlikely to spend more than two hours exploring properly.

It's free to access, which is always a bonus. The nearest holiday base is Piggles Retreat just under a mile away - a decent spot if you're after a forest-break kind of holiday in the area. Park Wood works well as a morning walk if you're staying locally, or a leg-stretcher if you're passing through Newmarket. Go when it's dry underfoot; after rain it can get properly muddy, and that's when the forest reveals just how working it actually is.
