Parsons Park Wood

A decent woodland walk just outside Penrith that doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't - a proper local patch where you can stretch your legs without needing to book a permit or pay an entrance fee. The forest floor is soft underfoot, the tree cover decent, and there's enough path work to keep things straightforward even if you're not navigating by compass.

It's the sort of place families with young walkers won't regret visiting, particularly if you're based at Pasturewood Holidays and fancy a morning out before heading back to the hot tub. Kids will manage it fine - no scrambling or proper climbing involved, just an honest woodland stomp. Older walkers might find it a bit limited if you're looking for genuine Alpine fell work, but as a break from the car it does the job.

The main thing worth knowing is that you won't find crowds here. It's working woodland rather than managed visitor attraction, which means you get a real sense of the Cumbrian landscape without the honeypot atmosphere. Allow an hour for a decent circuit if you're moving at a normal pace - longer if you're stopping to look at birds or just enjoying the quiet.

Best visited in autumn when the light filters through properly, though it's fine any time the ground isn't waterlogged. There's no cafe, no gift shop, no posted opening hours - just a wood that's there if you fancy it. That's either exactly what you want or it isn't.
