Pen Garn-wen

Scrambling up through gorse and bracken, the path to Pen Garn-wen's summit feels properly wild - this isn't your manicured National Trust hill walk. The peak sits just outside Llandysul, rising to a modest but rewarding height that gives you sweeping views across the Teifi Valley without requiring serious mountaineering kit.

Walkers and families with older kids will find this a satisfying half-day expedition. The climb takes about 45 minutes at a steady pace, though the final stretch gets a bit steep and the path can be indistinct in places. Worth bringing a map and compass if you're not confident with route-finding.

From the top, you can pick out the meandering River Teifi snaking towards Cardigan, with the Cambrian Mountains rolling away to the east. It's free to roam, naturally, and the views are cracking on a clear day - though like most Welsh peaks, it can disappear into cloud without warning.

This works well as a morning adventure if you're staying at one of the nearby camping spots like Greenfields Holiday Park or Brynawelon Touring & Camping Park. Both are within easy driving distance, and after a proper hill walk, you'll appreciate having somewhere comfortable to collapse with a cuppa.
