Pen Y Bigil

Standing at 1,509 feet, this rocky outcrop offers one of the most accessible summit experiences in the Llanberis area without the crowds that swarm Snowdon. The walk up takes about 45 minutes from the village, following a well-marked path that's steep enough to get your heart pumping but won't exhaust the kids.

From the top, you get proper views across Llyn Padarn and down the Llanberis Pass, with Snowdon looming magnificently to the southeast. On clear days, you can spot Anglesey across the Menai Strait. The summit itself is a bit rocky and windswept - not somewhere you'd want to linger in poor weather, but brilliant for a quick photo and a sandwich on a decent day.

Families staying at nearby spots like Snowdon View Holiday Park or Llanberis Touring Park will find this a good warm-up hike before tackling bigger peaks. It's free, obviously, and you can easily combine it with a trip to the Electric Mountain visitor centre or the Llanberis Lake Railway in the village below. Budget about two hours return, though keen walkers could knock it out in half that time. Best avoided in winter unless you're properly equipped - the path gets icy and the wind up there is fierce.
