Penhale Lake

Walking boots are essential for reaching this remote lake tucked away in Cornwall's clay country, a few miles northwest of Stenalees. Penhale Lake sits in a landscape shaped by centuries of china clay mining, surrounded by the distinctive white spoil heaps that define this part of the county. The water itself is surprisingly clear, reflecting the sky in a way that makes for decent photos if you've lugged your camera this far.

Getting there requires commitment - there's no car park right beside it, so you'll need to park in Stenalees and follow footpaths through old mining areas. Families with young children might find the walk a bit much, but older kids who don't mind a proper trek will enjoy the adventure. Bird watchers often spot interesting species here, particularly during migration periods.

The lake works well as part of a longer walking day if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like East Crinnis Holiday Park or Mena Farm.
