Pennard Buttress

Limestone cliffs drop dramatically into the Bristol Channel here, offering one of Gower's finest coastal viewpoints without the crowds that plague Three Cliffs Bay. The buttress itself is a proper scramble - not quite a climb, but you'll need decent footwear and a head for heights to reach the best vantage points.

From the top, the views stretch across to Devon on clear days, with Worms Head visible to the west. It's particularly stunning at sunset when the light catches the limestone formations. Rock climbers love this spot for obvious reasons, but walkers who fancy a bit of adventure will find it equally rewarding.

Getting there involves a decent walk from Southgate or a shorter but steeper approach from Three Cliffs Bay car park. Allow at least two hours if you're combining it with the coastal path. The scramble up the buttress takes maybe 20 minutes, but you'll want longer to appreciate the panorama.

Families with young children should probably stick to the easier viewpoints nearby - this isn't pushchair territory. For anyone staying at Three Cliffs Bay Holiday Park or Nicholaston Farm, it makes a cracking morning expedition before the beach crowds arrive.
