Penne's Place

There's not much left to see at Penne's Place, to be honest. This is an archaeological site near Borehamwood that once held Roman remains, but what's visible now amounts to little more than an overgrown patch of ground with a few markers if you're lucky. If you're genuinely into digging through Hertfordshire's Roman past, it's worth a brief visit while you're staying at Home Farm Glamping or Aldenham Country Park - both are practically on your doorstep. Otherwise, manage your expectations.

What makes it interesting, rather than what you'll actually see, is the history underneath. This was a significant Romano-British settlement, the sort of place where archaeologists get excited about pottery shards and foundation stones. The site itself is accessible and free, which is about all the positivity I can muster. You're looking at twenty minutes maximum, and that's being generous if you want to read any interpretation boards.

It works best as a quick stop-off if you're already exploring the wider area around Borehamwood. Pair it with a proper walk at Aldenham Country Park, which is close by and far more rewarding for families or anyone wanting to actually stretch their legs. The caravan parks in the region make decent bases for a week's holiday, and Penne's Place slots in as a curiosity rather than a destination. Fair enough if you're a history buff keen to visit every Roman site within driving distance, but don't expect dramatic ruins or much atmosphere.
