Penny's Wood

The woodland walk at Penny's Wood is a straightforward affair - dense trees, dappled light filtering through the canopy, and paths that wind deeper into what feels like proper countryside despite being within striking distance of Buckingham. It's the sort of place where you notice things: moss on fallen logs, the smell of earth after rain, birdsong actually being audible because there's no traffic noise.

The appeal here is simple and honest. Families with younger children will find it manageable - nothing too steep or technically demanding - though there's not much to actually do beyond walking. If you're after playground equipment or visitor facilities, look elsewhere. Serious walkers and nature types will appreciate the peace, especially mid-week when you might have the paths to yourself.

Local knowledge suggests allowing around an hour to ninety minutes depending on how many of the trails you fancy. The admission appears to be free, which makes it a reasonable add-on if you're based at one of the nearby parks - Barton Hill Farm is barely two miles away, Embers Camping roughly four. Both would serve as decent bases for exploring this corner of Oxfordshire.

The wood isn't a destination in itself, not really. But if you're already staying locally and the weather's decent, it's worth an outing. Bring proper boots though - it gets muddy, and some of the ground is uneven. The novelty wears off after a couple of hours, so pitch it as part of a broader afternoon rather than as your main event.
