Perranporth Airfield Memorial

The airfield itself is long gone, but what remains at Perranporth is a proper bit of wartime heritage tucked into a working nature reserve. During the Second World War, RAF Perranporth was a busy fighter station - Spitfires and Mosquitos operated from here - and you can still walk the old runways and spot the scattered remains of the base. The memorial honours those who served and died, and it's the kind of place that rewards a quiet wander rather than a quick stop.

This isn't a manicured attraction with visitor facilities. It's raw, a bit overgrown in places, which is exactly why the wildlife thrives. You'll see gorse and heathland that attracts everything from adders to Cornish choughs if you're lucky. Walkers get the most from it - allow a good hour to properly explore the perimeter and take in the views across to the coast near Trevellas Downs. The exposed concrete and rusted metal tell their own story without needing plaques on everything.

Access is free and unrestricted, though opening hours aren't formally published - it's essentially open land. Spring and early summer are ideal when the wildflowers are out and nesting birds are active. If you're staying at Perran View Holiday Park or Anchor Barrow Campsite just down the road, this is an excellent low-key morning or afternoon walk that fits perfectly alongside beach time. The nature reserve aspect means it genuinely matters that you stay on paths and respect the habitat. Bit steep in places, decent views, proper slice of Cornish history.
