Peterley Wood

The woodland around Peterley doesn't announce itself - you just find yourself walking under a dense canopy of beech and oak, the kind of proper forest floor where everything feels a bit quieter than the world outside. It's a straightforward place: paths wind through the trees, light filters through in patches, and if you're lucky you'll spot a muntjac deer or hear woodpeckers at work. There's no visitor centre, no café, no faffing about - just woodland that's been here for centuries doing what woodland does.

Walkers will find it decent enough for a two to three-hour loop, particularly if you're based near Tring and fancy something between a stroll and a proper hike. Families with younger kids might get restless after an hour unless they're the type to hunt for insects and climb fallen logs. The paths are manageable but can get muddy, especially after rain - wellies aren't mad here.

Timing-wise, spring brings bluebells and nesting birds, autumn the full leaf-turning effect. Summer's green but busy on weekends. The wood sits nicely between Bella Vista Camping and Home Farm Camping, both within six miles, so it slots in well as a walking option during a park-based holiday in the area rather than as a destination in itself.

It's free, naturally. No opening hours to worry about. Just turn up, walk, and leave it as you found it.
