Pheasanthouse Wood

There's a proper woodland walk waiting just east of Chelmsford in Pheasanthouse Wood, though it won't be a lengthy expedition. This is Essex forest, so don't expect dramatic elevation or ancient giants - you get the sort of mixed woodland that's been left alone long enough to feel genuinely peaceful despite being close to town.

The paths wind through deciduous trees and younger growth, decent for a brisk 45-minute wander if you're after fresh air without committing to a half-day hike. Woodland walking works well here: winter shows you the structure of the place, spring brings decent ground flora, and summer's canopy makes it genuinely cool when everywhere else is baking. Kids won't be bored for an hour, though there's no playground or obvious destination point - it's just trees and quiet.

Families staying at The Courts Campsite just half a mile away could fit this in before breakfast without faffing about with cars. It's also near enough to Hoe Mill Lock for a combined morning if you fancy swapping woodland for water. The Osea Leisure Park crowd, based six miles south, would probably find it worth a detour if they're craving something woodland-based rather than another caravan site walk.

There's no entry fee that I'm aware of - it's open access woodland - though I'd check locally in Chelmsford before assuming. Bring decent shoes; Essex clay gets boggy when wet. Best visited October through April when the ground's actually navigable and the wood doesn't feel uncomfortably humid.
