Phipp's Copse

A proper woodland walk just outside Fairford, Phipp's Copse is the sort of place locals know about and visitors stumble into by accident. The forest floor here is thick with leaf litter, the canopy dense enough that even on bright days you're walking in dappled shade. It's not enormous - you can work through the main paths in under an hour - but it's a genuine escape from the Cotswold villages nearby.

Walkers will find it straightforward enough, with no scrambling required, though the paths can be muddy after rain. The woodland itself is unremarkable in the way that British forests often are - no waterfalls or dramatic viewpoints - but that's rather the point. This is where you go to clear your head, not to tick off a sightseeing list. Children will get bored if they're expecting adventure, but if they're the type who like poking about in undergrowth and collecting interesting sticks, they'll be occupied for a good while.

There's nothing to suggest it's a formal attraction, which means no facilities and no entrance fee. Come in autumn or late spring when the woodland floor is at its most interesting. It works well as a half-morning activity if you're based at Great Farm nearby - an easy drive and a decent leg-stretch without eating into your whole day. Worth doing once, though it won't be the highlight of your Gloucestershire break.
