Piddles Plantation

The walk through Piddles Plantation is one of those quietly brilliant Hampshire experiences that doesn't announce itself. Tucked near Alresford, this forest offers proper woodland rambling without the crowds you'd find at the big attractions - just well-maintained paths threading through mixed broadleaf and conifer woodland.

It's the kind of place where you're actually alone with your thoughts. The light filters through the canopy in a way that makes even a damp day feel atmospheric rather than gloomy. Paths vary from straightforward strolls to longer circuits, so families with young legs and hardened walkers both get something worthwhile. The undergrowth is dense enough to feel like proper woodland rather than a manicured park.

You can easily spend two hours here without rushing, though a quick loop takes forty minutes if you're between other plans. It's particularly good in autumn when the leaf colour lifts what is otherwise fairly unremarkable terrain - ancient it isn't, but restorative it certainly is.

The nearest town of Alresford sits just a few miles away with shops and cafes if you want to build a day around the area. Woodlands Camping sits six miles out, making this an excellent morning walk before settling into a long weekend of exploring Hampshire's network of forests and country estates.
