Pilch Field

Pilch Field sits just outside Buckingham, a proper slice of Buckinghamshire countryside that most visitors miss entirely. It's not dramatic or flashy - just an open field with genuine historical weight. This is where the English Civil War came through with real force, and standing there, you can feel why armies bothered fighting over it.

The field itself is unremarkable to look at now. Rolling grass, hedgerows, the occasional walker passing through. But that's precisely the point. This is where battles happened on ordinary English soil, not in some fortress or walled town. If you're the sort who finds history in landscapes rather than plaques, you'll get something out of it. Kids under twelve might fidget after twenty minutes unless they're already keen on the period.

There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no admission fee - just public access to countryside. That makes it a decent stopping point if you're already exploring the area around Buckingham. Pair it with Embers Camping at Claydon, which is only four miles away, and you've got a solid weekend. The campsite has proper reviews, so it's worth considering if you want to base yourself nearby.

Go early morning or late afternoon when the light's better and you won't be dodging dog walkers. Allow an hour to walk around and actually think about what happened here. Don't expect facilities. Bring proper shoes - it can get muddy.
