Pimbo Bushes

The woodland around Pimbo, just outside Skelmersdale, is proper quiet - the sort of place you stumble into and suddenly remember why you came to Lancashire in the first place. It's not a manicured nature reserve or a visitor centre with a gift shop; it's genuine scrappy bushland where you can actually breathe without bumping into a tour group.

What you're getting here is woodland walking territory. The paths wind through mixed forest - nothing ancient or dramatic, but genuinely pleasant if you like the idea of being among trees without the hiking boots and packed lunch faff. It's the kind of spot where locals walk their dogs and families with younger kids can actually let them loose without worrying about cliff edges or crowds.

Realistic time commitment is maybe an hour or so if you're not rushing, longer if you're properly exploring. There's no admission charge that I'm aware of - it's just walk in and have a go. Best timing is autumn when the light filters through properly, or spring when there's actual colour happening.

If you're bunking down at The Secret Garden Glamping just down the road, this fills a gap between breakfast and your actual evening plans. It's not a day-long destination, but it stops you feeling trapped on the caravan park. Good for stretching legs, getting the kids away from screens for a bit, and remembering what Lancashire actually looks like beyond the industrial bits. Genuine, unpretentious, and free - can't really ask for more.
