Pitham Copse

Walking into Pitham Copse feels like stepping back about two hundred years. This is proper old-growth woodland - the kind where ancient oaks tower above you and the forest floor is thick with leaf litter and moss. You're looking at a genuine slice of Gloucestershire's natural heritage, not some managed visitor attraction with cafés and car parks.

It's a forester's woodland rather than a tourist destination, which is exactly why it works. The paths wind through dense cover, and on a grey afternoon you genuinely feel remote despite being within spitting distance of Fairford. Walkers will have the best time here - bring proper boots because it gets damp underfoot even days after rain. History buffs will appreciate the veteran trees; some of these specimens were already old when the industrial revolution happened.

Families with young kids might find it a touch underwhelming if they're expecting playground facilities or obvious "attractions". There's no interpretation boards telling you what everything is. What you get instead is the sound of the woodland - birds, rustling, the occasional deer if you're lucky and keep quiet.

No entrance fee as far as I can establish, and you can walk it in forty-five minutes to an hour depending on your pace. Early morning is best, when you might actually see wildlife. If you're based at Great Farm just down the road, this makes a proper morning outing before heading into Fairford for lunch.
