Pitney Playing Field

Pitney Playing Field is a nature reserve just outside Langport that punches well above its weight. What looks like a modest patch of Somerset grassland on the map actually attracts serious birdwatchers and botanists year-round, particularly during migration season when you'll spot warblers and thrushes threading through the scrub.

The reserve itself is open access, which means you can wander the paths freely without worrying about gates or opening times. It's the kind of place where an hour flies past if you're into birds, but families with young children might find it a touch dull - there's no visitor centre, play area, or facilities to speak of. What you get is peace, grassland, and the real chance of seeing something interesting through binoculars.

Summer's excellent for wildflowers, and spring migration brings genuine excitement if you know what you're listening for. Winter can be boggy, so proper boots matter. The nearest village, Langport, sits just three or four miles away and has the essentials if you need a cafe afterwards.

If you're camping at one of the local parks - Thorney Lakes, Thornhills, or Orchard Farm are all within five or six miles - this makes a proper morning stop before heading elsewhere. Don't expect crowds or infrastructure. Come for genuine countryside and the possibility of rare sightings, not for facilities. Well worth the detour if wildlife gets you going.
