Platinum Park

The reserve sits on the outskirts of Tewkesbury, a sprawling wetland that draws serious birdwatchers and anyone after a proper walk without the crowds. It's the kind of place where you'll spot lapwings and redshanks if you time it right, especially in winter when the migrant populations swell. Paths wind through reed beds and across open water, with viewing platforms positioned to give you decent sightlines without spooking everything that flies. The light here is exceptional in late afternoon - that golden hour really picks out the water and makes it feel like you've walked into a nature documentary.

You'll want binoculars and a bird book unless you're just here for the walk itself, which is perfectly valid. Most people clock a couple of hours, though dedicated twitchers will happily spend half the day. It's free, which is always a bonus, and there's no time limit - come and go as you please. Bring a waterproof; the paths can be boggy after rain and you're basically out in the elements with no shelter.

If you're camping nearby at Winchcombe Camping & Caravanning Club, Platinum Park makes an excellent morning sortie before heading back for lunch. It's low-key and unpretentious in the best way - no visitor centre faffing about, just access to something genuinely interesting. Not for people expecting manicured trails and gift shops, but if you like your nature reserves honest and working, this delivers.
