Pluto

York's contemporary art scene doesn't get much more engaging than Pluto. This is a proper working gallery space - the kind where you might actually bump into artists in the studio rather than just wandering past framed prints on white walls. What sets it apart is the focus on experimental work and emerging talent, which means you're never quite sure what you'll find when you walk in. One visit might be abstract installations, the next month it's photography or mixed media pieces that make you think twice.

It's ideal for art-curious types rather than casual browsers. If you're dragging reluctant teenagers round galleries, this one at least has the energy to keep things interesting - no stuffy silences, more of a creative buzz. The scale works in its favour too; you won't need three hours to see everything, which is refreshing when you've got a afternoon to fill.

Stay at one of the nearby holiday parks - Cawood Park or York South Ltd are both top-rated and close enough that you can make Pluto part of a wider York visit without it feeling like a detour. It pairs well with the city's Roman history and river walks, but in quite a different register. Check ahead for opening times and any admission charges, as smaller galleries can be variable. Allow an hour minimum, longer if something really grabs you.
