Poltair Park

The reserve sits just outside St Austell, a working landscape where nature does its thing without much fussing about. You're walking through woodland and open grassland where birds actually outnumber visitors most days - proper peaceful. The trails wind through habitats that support everything from woodland birds to wildflowers depending on the season. It's the sort of place where you notice things: the light filtering through oak and birch, the sound of water if there's been rain, the way the paths fork and surprise you.

This is genuinely for people who want a walk without the Instagram crowds. Not a destination with facilities or a visitor centre - just access to land that matters ecologically. Families with older kids who can manage uneven terrain will get something from it. History types might appreciate that it's been working land for centuries. Serious birdwatchers will have their binoculars out within minutes.

Allow a couple of hours if you're doing a proper loop. Spring and early summer are best - that's when birds are vocal and wildflowers actually show up. Go midweek if possible. It's free to walk, no gates, no faffing about.

Stays at East Crinnis or The Meadows Campsite put you within three kilometres, making this an easy morning or afternoon slot between bigger days out. The clay heritage stuff around St Austell is close enough if you want something with more structure alongside this.
