The Apple Press sits in Porlock, a proper little village about five miles from Minehead, and it's exactly the sort of place that makes you realise how much of local heritage gets overlooked. This isn't a grand museum - it's a working cider press and museum combined, housed in what feels like someone's genuine labour of love rather than a corporate heritage venture.

You get to see how Somerset cider has been made traditionally, with the actual machinery on display and demonstrations if you time it right. The press itself is the star of the show - heavy iron and wood doing what it's done for generations. There's also a small collection of related equipment and the sort of local knowledge you only get from people who actually live and work with this stuff.

It's best suited to anyone with a genuine interest in cider-making or rural heritage rather than families after a day's entertainment. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you chat with staff. Winter's probably when it's most operational, though it's worth checking opening times before you go - they're not always consistent.

If you're staying at Minehead Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Butlins Minehead, Porlock makes an excellent half-day loop combined with a walk up Porlock Hill or a pint at the village pub. It's the kind of visit that rewards curiosity but won't fill an entire day on its own.
