Porrit's Close Hill

The walk up Porrit's Close Hill from Hartlepool takes about twenty minutes if you don't stop to admire the view every other step - which you will. It's not a mountain by any stretch, but it's high enough to give you proper vistas across County Durham and out towards the coast. On a clear day you can see right across to the industrial landscape that makes this part of the North East what it is.

This is one for walkers rather than casual strollers. The path climbs steadily and the ground can be boggy depending on the weather, so decent boots are worth the effort. The reward is being able to stand somewhere quiet and actually see the shape of the land around you. There's nothing fancy up top - no café, no information board, just the space to breathe and think.

Families with older kids who enjoy a decent hike will get something out of it. Younger children might find it a bit of a slog for limited payoff, and the views won't mean much to them. History buffs should know this is proper mining country, and the landscape itself tells that story - you're literally walking over generations of extraction and industry.
