About Portholland
It's fundamentally a spot for pottering rather than spectacle. The beach itself is small - maybe 100 metres across - but the rock formations either side are worth a scramble, and the water's clean enough for a proper swim if you're brave. The village has just enough going on: a couple of cafes, a pub with decent fish, and enough character that photographers spend far longer here than they mean to.
Families with younger kids will get a solid couple of hours out of it. Older children might find it a bit quiet unless they're the exploring type. The real draw is for walkers and anyone after genuine peace without the tourist infrastructure. There's no admission fee and no opening hours - it's a working village, not an attraction with gates.
If you're staying at Treveague Campsite nearby, Portholland makes an excellent half-day excursion. It's close enough for a morning trip but far enough that it feels like a proper outing. Go early to bag parking, and bring decent shoes if you plan on exploring the rocks. The light here in late afternoon is rather stunning.
