Portreath Beach

Golden sand stretches for nearly a mile at Portreath, backed by low cliffs and a proper working harbour that gives the place genuine character. Unlike the polished beaches closer to Perranporth, this one feels less manicured - there's actual fishing boats, a sense of locals going about their business, and plenty of space even in summer. The beach shelves gently, which makes it decent for families with younger kids, though the Atlantic swell can pick up fast, so check conditions before letting them loose in the water. The seafront café and chip shop are solid enough for lunch, nothing fancy but they do the job. You'll want a couple of hours here minimum - longer if you're keen on walks along the coastal path, which offers cracking views back towards Perranporth. Winter mornings are often clearer and quieter, though you'll need a wetsuit if you're planning to swim. Redruth is just four miles inland if you need supplies or a decent pub. From Lanyon Holiday Park or Trevarth Holiday Park - both excellent bases and within a short drive - Portreath makes a proper alternative to the busier beaches. It's the sort of place that rewards wandering rather than rushing through. Real swimmers and surfers know it well; families seeking a quieter afternoon will rate it too.
