Potash Woods

Ancient woodland on the Essex flatlands doesn't sound thrilling until you're actually walking beneath the canopy near Benfleet and realise how rare this is. Potash Woods is proper old forest - the sort of place where the ground squelches underfoot even in summer and you'll spot bluebells in spring if you time it right. It's not dramatic or vast, but it's exactly what you want when the Essex landscape outside feels relentlessly open and drained.

Walkers will get the most from it. There's something restorative about moving through established woodland after hours on flat paths and caravan sites. The trees offer genuine shelter, and the paths wind naturally through - no obvious circuit to follow, which means you can meander for twenty minutes or two hours depending on mood. Families with young children might find it a bit muddy and unremarkable after half an hour, unless they're genuinely into spotting birds and identifying trees.

Go in spring or autumn when the light filters through differently and you won't be melting. The woods work brilliantly as a morning walk if you're staying at Essex Glamping or Riverside Village Holiday Park - both are close enough for a pre-breakfast stroll without loading the car. Admission appears to be free, which is proper value given how few genuine woodlands survive in this corner of Essex. Bring wellies. The floor is wet.
