Priory Wood

Walk into Priory Wood near Chepstow and you're immediately swallowed by proper old-growth forest - the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. The canopy is dense enough that even on bright days it feels like dusk, which sounds gloomy but honestly it's rather lovely. Paths wind through without too much faffing about, and the woodland floor is soft underfoot, carpeted in generations of leaf matter.

This isn't a destination for people after sweeping vistas or Instagram moments. It's for walkers who like a bit of solitude and the smell of damp earth. Kids will enjoy it for maybe an hour if they're the type to poke around fallen logs and look for woodland creatures - the quiet tends to settle them down. If your crew needs playground equipment and ice cream stalls, you'll be disappointed.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared: bring water, wear proper shoes with grip, and check the forecast because muddy patches can get slick. The wood is accessible year-round, though autumn when the leaves are turning is when it properly pays for itself. Spring brings bluebells if you time it right.

If you're based at Penhein Glamping nearby, it's an easy morning excursion before heading into Chepstow for lunch. Not a full-day destination, but a solid addition to a woodland-focused holiday in the area. Best visited midweek to avoid weekend crowds.
