Private Beach

The stretch of sand near Holyhead feels genuinely removed from the usual North Wales tourist crush. What makes it 'private' is less about locked gates and more about the fact that most people heading to Anglesey never find it - they're queuing at the honeypots instead. You get a proper beach here: decent width, backed by dunes, and on a good day the light across the water is proper lovely.

It's the kind of place where families actually want to stay for a few hours rather than snap a photo and move on. Kids can paddle safely, there's enough sand to build with, and walkers get a good stretch of shore to cover. The rocks at either end offer a bit of scrambling interest if you're not just after the flat sandy bits.

Timing matters. Low tide reveals more beach; high tide pushes you up against the dunes. Summer weekends bring crowds, but weekdays in shoulder seasons are near-silent. Bring a windbreaker - the Welsh coast always has teeth to its breeze, even when the sun's out.

Holyhead itself is five minutes' drive away if you need supplies or a coffee. Pengraig Campsite sits just 6.2 miles south, which makes this a proper option for a two or three-day seaside stretch during a broader Anglesey trip. It won't bowl you over with dramatic cliffs or golden-hour Instagram drama, but it's honest terrain that actually works for a family day out.
