If you've got a dog and you're staying anywhere near Sudbury, Prospect Meadow is the sort of place that'll save your sanity. It's a secure field - properly fenced off - where your dog can have a proper run without you spending the whole time watching for traffic or other dogs causing bother. The field itself is straightforward: open grassland, safe perimeter, room to throw a ball or let them chase about. Nothing fancy, but that's rather the point.

You'll get the most out of it if you've got an energetic dog that needs to burn off steam before settling into a holiday cottage. Thirty minutes here and they'll be knackered for the afternoon. It's free to use and there's no booking required, though facilities are minimal - bring your own water if your dog's thirsty. Best to arrive early morning or late afternoon to avoid other dogs if yours isn't great with company.

Polstead Country Park, about five miles away, offers proper woodland walks if you want something more scenic after your dog's had their field session.
