Prospect Walk

A riverside walk that cuts through proper woodland - Prospect Walk sits just outside Hereford and delivers exactly what it promises without any fuss. You're following the River Wye through mature trees, mostly flat going, and it takes about an hour to do the full loop if you're not stopping for photos every five minutes. The reserve itself isn't vast, but it's popular with birdwatchers because you actually see things - woodpeckers, nuthatches, if you're lucky. The river itself is the main draw: glass-smooth in places, proper scenic.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's straightforward enough for families with younger kids, though the paths can be muddy after rain and there's the odd root to watch for. The riverside sections are genuinely lovely in autumn when the trees turn. Spring brings migrating birds, so that's worth timing right if you're into that sort of thing.

Free to access, no facilities on the ground, so bring water if you're making an afternoon of it. Allow an hour minimum, longer if you're birdwatching or just taking it slow. It works brilliantly as a morning walk from Hereford Camping and Caravanning Club Site - that's only six miles away - leaving you the afternoon for the city centre or other bits of the county. Not a spectacle, but a proper place to actually be outside rather than just tick a box.
