Pryor's Wood

Pryor's Wood is a proper slice of Hertfordshire woodland just east of Stevenage - the sort of place locals know well but visitors often miss entirely. You're walking through mixed deciduous forest here, with beech and oak dominating, the kind of cover that feels genuinely remote even though you're barely three miles from town.

The main draw is straightforward: a network of footpaths threading through the trees, good for a brisk two-hour walk or a slower afternoon poke about if you've got kids in tow. The woodland floor is soft underfoot, which beats the hell out of pavement walking, and there's enough variety in the terrain to keep things interesting without being genuinely challenging. Come spring and the bluebells are decent, though you'll want to time it right - mid-May usually does it.

It's most worthwhile for walkers and families who aren't after anything fancy - no cafe, no visitor centre, just trees and paths. Dog owners rate it highly. The real bonus is proximity to Radwell Lake campsite and the other parks dotted nearby - Pryor's Wood makes a solid half-day addition if you're camping in the area. Free access as far as I can tell, though facilities are minimal.

Truth is, it won't blow your mind as a destination in itself. But if you're based at one of the local caravan parks and the weather's decent, it's well worth an hour's wander. The woodland's doing what woodlands should - nothing more, nothing less.
