The walk through Pumphrey Wood near Marlborough is straightforward enough - mixed woodland with established paths that don't demand much navigation skill. You'll find beech, oak and hazel threading through, with decent canopy cover that keeps things cool even on warmer days.

It's the sort of place that rewards a slow pace rather than quick ticking-off. Families with younger children can manage it without drama, though there's nothing particularly wild or memorable that'll stick in their heads afterwards. Older kids and actual walkers will get more from it as part of a larger circuit - which is really how to approach this: not as a destination in itself, but as a leg of something bigger. The woodland proper takes maybe 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much you dawdle.

There's genuine value if you're staying at Ridgeway Campsite just 1.7 miles away or any of the other camping spots dotted around Marlborough. It's close enough for an evening stroll or a morning outing before heading elsewhere, and that's its real job - filling in the gaps between bigger attractions rather than being the main event. The paths are accessible year-round, though winter mud can be sticky.

If you're looking for something with more character or drama, you'd do better pushing further afield. But for a reliable, uncomplicated walk within spitting distance of your tent or van, Pumphrey Wood does what it says on the tin.
