Pups and Pets sits just outside Chester in Flintshire, and it's one of those places that works a treat if you're travelling with animals or you're simply daft about them. It's a working animal sanctuary of sorts - you'll see various creatures on the grounds, though the setup is fairly low-key rather than a full-blown petting zoo experience.

The appeal here is straightforward: if your dog or cat needs a break during a caravan holiday, or you want to let the kids interact with animals in a controlled setting, it does the job. It's not elaborate - don't expect themed attractions or elaborate enclosures - but it's genuine and local, which counts for something. The walk around takes perhaps an hour, maybe less if you're not lingering.

You're close enough to Chester (just a short drive) that this works as a half-day activity rather than a full day out. Families with young children will get more mileage from it than older kids. Dogs are generally welcome, though worth checking ahead as policies can vary.

If you're staying at Fir Trees or Oakwood Farm - both within a few miles - this could break up a rainy afternoon or give restless pets some variation. The glamping options at Willow Farm or Honeypot Hideaways are further afield but still accessible for a day trip. It's not a reason to book a week's holiday around, but if you're already in the area with animals in tow, it's worth ringing ahead to check current opening times and whether they're operating when you visit.
