Quintain

The Quintain sits just outside Sevenoaks as one of Kent's more unusual medieval remnants - a tilting post that would have been used for jousting practice back in the day. It's basically a wooden structure on a pivot, designed so knights could ride at it and test their aim without the expense of an actual opponent on horseback. Bit quirky, that.

What you're looking at now is a reconstruction, mind you, not the original timber. The thing stands in relative isolation, which gives it an oddly contemplative quality - you can picture the clang of lances and the thunder of hooves across what's now quiet countryside. It's the kind of stop that takes fifteen minutes maximum, so don't expect a morning's entertainment. History enthusiasts and medieval buffs will find it worth the detour from Sevenoaks itself, particularly if you're already exploring the Weald's castles and manor houses.

If you're based at any of the nearby holiday parks - Gatehouse Wood is practically on the doorstep at just 1.5 miles away - it's an easy afternoon leg-stretch. Thriftwood and River View Camping sit a bit further out but still within reasonable driving distance if you're doing a broader Kent tour. The Hop Farm over at 6.2 miles could make a fuller day out combined with this and some proper walking.

Timing-wise, there's no entrance fee and no opening hours to fret about - it's freely accessible. Just go. Expect nothing fancy, but you'll leave with a genuine sense of having stumbled onto something real and genuinely old.
