Radnor Wood Camp

Standing on this iron age hilltop feels like stepping back 2,500 years. The ramparts and ditches that once protected an ancient British settlement are still clearly visible, wrapping around the summit in impressive earthwork rings. From up here, the views sweep across the Shropshire Hills towards Wenlock Edge and beyond.

Walkers will love the approach through Radnor Wood itself - a proper climb through dense woodland that opens dramatically onto the grassy summit plateau. The circular earthworks make for fascinating exploration, especially if you've got children who enjoy a bit of ancient mystery. History enthusiasts will appreciate how well-preserved the fortifications remain, though there's precious little interpretation on site.

Getting here requires a decent walk from Craven Arms, so allow a good half day if you're making the trek. The paths can be muddy after rain, and it's definitely more rewarding in clear weather when those long-distance views really pay off.

This works brilliantly as part of a Shropshire Hills break, with several glamping options nearby including Wild Valley Glamping and Offa's Pitch Glamping within easy reach. Black Hall Lodges offers a more luxurious base if you prefer proper beds after a day tramping ancient earthworks. Worth combining with other hillforts in the area for a proper iron age trail.
