RAF Chailey Polish Squadrons

A modest memorial tucked into the Sussex countryside near Hassocks marks one of the war's most remarkable untold stories. RAF Chailey was home to Polish fighter squadrons during the Second World War - pilots who'd escaped Nazi occupation and came to Britain to continue the fight. The site itself is fairly low-key, a reflective spot rather than a major visitor attraction with queues and cafes, but that's rather the point.

You get a real sense of what these men endured: displaced from home, flying dangerous missions over occupied Europe, knowing their country was under enemy rule. The memorial honours pilots from 302 and 308 Polish Squadrons who operated from here. This works best for history enthusiasts and anyone with a genuine interest in the Polish wartime experience - not particularly geared towards young kids, and there's little in the way of facilities. If you're camping at one of the nearby sites like Blackberry Wood or Southdown Way, it makes a meaningful morning detour. The South Downs are at their best in spring and autumn, when you can combine the memorial visit with a proper walk through the rolling hills.
