RAF Donna Nook

The RAF airfield at Donna Nook sits on the Lincolnshire coast like a frozen moment from the Cold War. You can't go everywhere - it's still operational - but the public areas let you get close enough to feel the history. The visitor centre gives you the basics: it was a fighter station during World War II, then became a Lightning interceptor base during the 1960s when the Soviet threat felt very real indeed.

Walking the perimeter, you'll spot old hangars, dispersal points, and the sort of austere military architecture that tells its own story without needing much explanation. The airfield itself is utterly flat and windswept, which makes the scale of it all the more apparent. On a clear day you can see right across the Lincolnshire plain.

It's proper interesting if you're into aviation history or Cold War stuff. Kids might find it a bit sparse after twenty minutes unless they're genuinely fascinated by aircraft - there's not much interactive content. Military enthusiasts will spend a couple of hours easily, photographing buildings and reading the information boards.

Admission is free, which is generous. The nearest town is Louth, just a few miles inland. If you're staying at Lakeside Park or Sunnydale Holiday Park nearby, it's a decent half-day diversion, especially if the weather's decent and you fancy a walk in the wind. Don't expect a slick visitor experience - that's rather the point. It's genuine and unvarnished.
