Rail Hey Wood

Dense woodland stretches for miles here, creating proper walking country that's surprisingly wild for somewhere so close to Preston. Rail Hey Wood feels like stepping into a different world - the canopy blocks out most daylight even on bright days, and the paths wind through ancient oak and beech that have clearly been here for centuries.

Dog walkers absolutely love this place. The network of footpaths means you can easily spend two hours exploring without retracing your steps, and there's enough space that even on weekends it rarely feels crowded. Families with young children might find some of the terrain a bit challenging - the paths can get muddy and uneven, particularly after rain.

Birdwatchers should bring binoculars. I've spotted woodpeckers and various finches during visits, though the thick canopy makes sightings more about sound than sight most of the time. The wood connects to broader countryside walks, so serious hikers can extend their route considerably.

Being free to access makes it excellent value for a morning's exercise when staying at nearby parks like Orchard Glamping or Gibsons Barn. Just don't expect facilities - this is proper woodland, not a managed country park. Wear decent boots and maybe pack a thermos if you're planning to make an afternoon of it.
