Ratchwood Plantation

Dense pine woodland stretches across rolling countryside just south of Belford, offering proper walking territory for those who want to escape the Northumberland coast crowds. Ratchwood Plantation is working forestry rather than manicured parkland, which means muddy boots and the occasional rumble of logging machinery.

Families with older children will appreciate the network of forest tracks that wind through the conifers. The paths can get properly boggy after rain, so decent footwear is essential. Dog walkers love it here - acres of space for off-lead adventures, though keep an eye out for farm traffic on the wider tracks.

It's not spectacular in the way that Hadrian's Wall or the coast castles are, but there's something satisfying about a good stomp through proper working woodland. The views from higher ground take in the Cheviot Hills, and you might spot red squirrels if you're lucky and quiet.

For anyone staying at Glororum Holiday Park or the camping spots around Budle Bay, it's a decent morning's walk when the seaside gets too windy or the children need to burn off energy. Allow a couple of hours for a proper circuit. Free access as far as I know, though parking can be limited along the minor roads that border the plantation.
