Rayne Village Park

The walk through Rayne Village Park is a proper Essex surprise - woodland paths that feel a world away from the A120 rumble nearby. It's a modest nature reserve, but don't let that fool you. You get genuine ancient woodland here, the kind where the canopy is thick enough to make you forget which century you're in, and if you're lucky with timing you'll spot the resident nuthatches or spot woodpeckers doing their thing on the older trees.

It works best for families with walkers aged five and up - there's enough distance to feel like an actual outing without anyone throwing a tantrum halfway round. Birdwatchers will find it worthwhile, especially in spring when migrants pass through. The whole circuit takes about 45 minutes if you're not stopping to identify every warbler. Go early morning on a weekday if you want peace; weekends pull the local walking groups out in force.

Being just east of Braintree makes it an easy slot into a camping holiday at one of the surrounding spots. Stocks Farm Camping is barely five minutes away, and if you're based there or at Golden Grove two miles down the road, this becomes your morning constitutional. It's free to access, obviously, and there's a small car park. The reserve ties in nicely with Gosfield Lake Resort five miles off if you fancy a bigger base with more facilities - the lake itself is frankly nicer for a full day, but Rayne Village gives you the woodland fix without faffing about booking tickets.
