Reed's Wood

A proper forest walk just outside Hythe, Reed's Wood offers the kind of shelter you'll want on a drizzly Kent afternoon. The paths wind through dense woodland - nothing fancy, just honest trees and the occasional clearing where light breaks through. It's the sort of place locals know and visitors stumble upon by accident.

You're looking at a straightforward woodland ramble rather than a destination attraction. The main appeal is getting off the main roads and into something green without having to drive far from town. Walkers will appreciate it more than young children - there's no playground or visitor centre, just woodland and quietness. Allow an hour or so, depending on which paths you fancy and how muddy things are.

Timing-wise, spring brings bluebells (if you're lucky with the weather), and autumn is decent too. Winter's fine if you don't mind wet feet. Summer can feel a bit claustrophobic with the density of foliage.

If you're based at Port Lympne Safari Park just down the road, Reed's Wood works as a handy stretch-your-legs break between animal spotting. It won't justify a special trip on its own, but as part of a broader Hythe weekend - combining coastal walks, the Royal Military Canal, and a safari park visit - it fits nicely. Free to access, naturally. Just turn up and go.
