Reigate Hill air crash

On a Surrey hillside near Tadworth, you can still find wreckage from a B-17 bomber that crashed here during World War II. The site sits within Reigate Hill and Gatton Park, managed by the National Trust, and it's a sobering reminder of what aerial combat actually cost. Walking up to it takes about twenty minutes from the car park - proper leg work, but the path is decent enough.

What you find isn't dramatic. There's twisted metal, some identification plaques, and ground that's still scarred. It's the quiet that gets you. No fanfare, no visitor centre, just the wreckage where nine American airmen died in 1944. The National Trust has left it deliberately understated, which feels right somehow.

History enthusiasts will find this genuinely moving. Families with younger kids might not get much from it beyond "old plane bits", but teenagers studying the war period will connect properly. Walkers should absolutely take this on - the wider Reigate Hill area offers proper woodland trails, and you can combine it with Gatton Park itself.

The site is free to visit and accessible year-round. Allow a couple of hours if you're doing the full hillside walk. It's about three miles from Alderstead Heath Caravan Club and Surrey Hills Park, so easy to slot into a park-based holiday in the area. Spring's probably nicest - the woodland's alive, and it somehow makes the history feel less heavy.

This isn't a day-out attraction. It's something you visit because the story matters.
