Renton International Brigades Memorial

The memorial sits quietly in Renton, a small town near Balloch that most holiday-makers zip past on their way to Loch Lomond. It's dedicated to the local volunteers who fought in the Spanish Civil War between 1936 and 1939 - men who left their homes in West Dunbartonshire to oppose fascism thousands of miles away. The scale is modest, which somehow makes it more moving. You'll find names, dates, and the weight of ordinary people making an extraordinary choice.

This isn't a major attraction with queues or gift shops. It's the sort of place you visit if you're genuinely interested in 20th-century history or want to understand the political passions that gripped Scotland in that era. History buffs will spend a good half-hour here. Kids might get restless - there's no interactive element, just a memorial and its stories.

Renton itself is understated, but it's close enough to the excellent holiday parks around Lomond Woods and Loch Lomond Retreat that you could easily visit while staying in the area. Free to visit, obviously. Go on a clear day if you can - the location is pleasant and you might have the place to yourself, which lets you think properly about why these men went.

Worth the detour? Only if you're already in West Dunbartonshire or serious about Scottish history. Don't drive out specially, but if you're staying at one of the nearby parks, it's a dignified way to spend an hour.
