Repot Hackney Wick

The old Hackney Wick pottery works is one of those London landmarks that most visitors completely miss. Walk along the towpath beside the River Lea and you'll spot the Victorian industrial buildings clustered together - red brick chimneys, arched windows, the whole lot looking like it's been frozen since the 1920s. It was a proper hub for ceramic production back in the day, and the architecture tells that story pretty clearly.

These days it's part artist studios, part industrial heritage site, and the whole area has an undeniably raw charm. You won't find guided tours or visitor centres here - this is about wandering around on your own, reading the plaques if you can, and appreciating what Victorian manufacturing actually looked like before everything went abroad. The riverside setting helps too. It's genuinely atmospheric rather than polished.

Historians and industrial archaeology types will find this genuinely interesting. Photographers love it because the light hits those old brick facades properly. Families with bored kids might find it a bit underwhelming after fifteen minutes though - there's not much to actually do beyond looking around.

Head down the towpath for a proper walk, stop at the site itself for an hour, then continue south along the canal towards Walthamstow or the Lea Valley reservoirs. Free admission, no time limit.
