Restenneth Priory

You'll find yourself standing in front of a seriously atmospheric ruin just outside Forfar, staring at what remains of a medieval priory that's been left to the elements for centuries. The stonework - what's still standing - speaks volumes about the ambition of whoever built this place back in the 11th century. It's an Augustinian priory, so proper religious importance, and you can still make out the bones of the structure despite centuries of neglect.

Walking around the site gives you a real sense of scale. The walls aren't that tall anymore, but you get the picture of what this would have been - a significant religious centre in the Scottish Highlands. It's the sort of place history types will geek out over, whereas young kids might find it a bit abstract after ten minutes. There's nothing to actually do here except look and imagine, which is either brilliant or not depending on your mood.

It's free to wander around, no gates or barriers, just accessible whenever you fancy a look. Give yourself thirty minutes maximum, unless you're genuinely into medieval ecclesiastical ruins. Worth coupling it with a stay at Greenhillock Glamping nearby - that's only about five miles away and brilliant if you want a proper outdoor base for exploring the Forfar area. The priory won't take long, but it's a solid addition to an Aberdeenshire itinerary if you're already in the region.
