RHS Garden Harlow Carr

The RHS Garden at Harlow Carr sits just outside Harrogate and takes a good half-day minimum if you're actually going to see it properly. This isn't a quick stroll round some flowerbeds - it's 68 acres of proper horticultural ambition, with everything from vegetable plots and fruit gardens to woodland walks and a working kitchen garden that tells you what's actually edible and when.

What makes it worth your time is that it feels like a garden designed by people who actually garden, rather than one created purely for Instagram. You'll see experimental growing techniques, rare plant collections, and seasonal displays that change dramatically depending when you visit. Spring is obviously mad with colour, but autumn's worth a visit too - fewer crowds and the bones of the garden show through better.

Families with children will find enough to occupy a morning, though the gardens appeal more to adults who enjoy pottering and reading the endless information boards. If you're staying at Harrogate Caravan Park or Rudding Holiday Park nearby, it's well worth a visit. Combine it with a walk into Harrogate town centre itself - the cafes are decent and the bookshops are actually good.

There's a cafe on site, so you're not dependent on driving back into town for lunch. Allow three to four hours if you want to see most of it without rushing. Given it's the Royal Horticultural Society running the show, standards are high. Admission isn't free, but if you're genuinely interested in gardening or plant design, the entry fee pays for itself in ideas you'll nick for your own garden.
