Riddle Hill

The walk up Riddle Hill rewards you with proper views across the Oxfordshire countryside - nothing dramatic, but on a clear day you can see for miles across the Thames Valley. It's not particularly high or challenging, which makes it ideal for families who want something more substantial than a stroll but won't need specialist kit.

You get the real flavour of the Chilterns up here. Rolling fields, woodland paths, the occasional deer if you're lucky. The summit itself is straightforward to reach from Wallingford, and locals use it regularly for evening walks or weekend rambles. Bring decent shoes though - it can get boggy after rain, and the path isn't maintained like you'd find on more tourist-focused trails.

Allow 90 minutes for a relaxed circuit, longer if you're stopping to take photos or just sit about. There's genuine satisfaction in reaching the top, even if you're not gasping for breath. History types will appreciate that you're walking ground that's been tramped for centuries - the Ridgeway itself runs nearby.

Both put you within easy striking distance of Wallingford's market town amenities and other local walks. Not a destination in itself, but absolutely worth including in a proper Oxfordshire walking week.
