Rigton Hill

Rigton Hill sits just north of Leeds, a modest moorland summit that doesn't demand much but rewards a straightforward walk. The ascent is gentle by Yorkshire standards - you're not wrestling with anything dramatic, just steady ground leading to an open hilltop where you get proper views across the surrounding farmland and moorland. On a clear day you can see quite far, though it's not the kind of panorama that stops you dead in your tracks.

This is walker territory, really. Families with young kids might find the approach a bit samey - no dramatic drops or curiosities to hold their attention - but teenagers who actually enjoy moving their legs will get on fine. There's nothing fancy waiting at the top: no monument, no café, just the hill itself and whatever weather you've brought with you.

Allow an hour or so for a decent circuit, depending on your pace and whether you faff about taking photos. There's no entrance fee or facilities to speak of - you just turn up and walk. Early morning is your best bet, particularly in late spring or autumn when the light's decent and you won't be dodging bank holiday crowds.

If you're staying at Haighfield or Moor Lodge - both within two miles - it makes a solid morning outing without needing to drive far. Pair it with time at one of the nearby parks, and you've got a low-key but proper day out in the Yorkshire countryside.
