Ripon Workhouse Museum

The Victorian workhouse on Allhallowtide in Ripon is a properly sobering place to spend an afternoon. You walk through rooms where the poor were literally worked for their board - separate wings for men and women, dormitories with narrow beds still made up period-style, the master's quarters looking down on it all. It's the kind of museum that makes you grateful for the welfare state, frankly.

The building itself dates from 1853 and it's been preserved with enough detail to feel authentic without being ghoulish.
